Marketing Management I · Session 03

Competition & Positioning Lab

Build an evidence-based competitive matrix, diagnose your current digital position and convert the findings into a focused positioning plan.

Start the lab

One sequence. One defensible output.

01 · PRODUCT + BUYER PERSONA + MARKET
02 · COMPETITIVE SET
03 · JOURNEY MATRIX
04 · DIGITAL POSITIONING
05 · STRATEGIC DECISION
01 · Define the decision

Start with the customer, not with a list of brands.

Competition is relevant only when the product, Buyer Persona and market context are explicit.

ProductCategory · value proposition · use case
Buyer PersonaNeeds · pains · buying criteria
MarketSector · geography · context
Competitive pressureAttention · trust · demand · conversion

02 · Build the competitive set

Leader + five relevant competitors.

Direct competitors are only one category. Consider attention, demand, channels and substitutes when they compete for the same customer decision.

# Brand Role Why relevant? Website / evidence starting point
03 · Competitive Marketing Matrix

Score observable activity across the journey.

Use 1–5 only when evidence exists. Use N/O when a signal cannot be observed. Unknown is not zero.

Scoring rule: 1 = Very low · 2 = Limited · 3 = Established · 4 = Strong · 5 = Category-leading · N/O = Not observable. Every score should be defensible with a source, date checked and a short justification.
04 · Read the matrix

Two readings: competitor pressure and technique intensity.

Horizontal reading shows who applies the strongest visible pressure. Vertical reading shows saturated or underused techniques.

Our matrix score—Average observable score
Highest competitor—No data yet
Main saturated technique—Highest competitive intensity
Potential whitespace—Low intensity; validate Buyer Persona relevance

05 · Digital positioning diagnosis

Visibility is broader than SEO.

Assess the observable relative presence of the brand where the customer discovers, compares and decides.

06 · Turn evidence into a plan

Build a focused positioning plan.

The goal is not “do more marketing”. The goal is to define which objective is justified by the evidence and how it will be measured.

Priority Positioning dimension Action Evidence / rationale KPI Baseline Target Owner Horizon
07 · Evidence & handover

Make the output defendable.

Your handover should contain the competitive set, journey matrix, matrix reading, positioning diagnosis and one strategic implication.

Export your evidence

Keep your working evidence. Your score is useful only when another person can understand why you assigned it.

Build final submission
Three-minute defence: “What evidence changed how we understand our competitive position?”
08 · Final student evidence

Generate the document you will submit.

This final evidence consolidates the complete exercise into one shareable document: context, competitive set, matrix, diagnosis, positioning and action plan.

METHODOLOGY AT THE END OF THE JOURNEY

DIIIP explains how competitive evidence becomes a positioning decision

The lab is complete when observations are transformed into structured evidence, interpreted as competitive intelligence and converted into measurable positioning actions.

D
Data

Observable competitor signals: brands, URLs, sources, dates, journey activities, search presence, campaigns, audience environments and AI visibility.

I
Information

The evidence is structured into the competitive set, journey matrix and five positioning dimensions: Search, Demand, Paid, Audience and AI.

I
Intelligence

Comparable scores reveal competitor pressure, technique intensity, saturation and underused spaces without treating missing evidence as zero.

I
Insights

The diagnosis identifies relative strengths, visibility gaps, relevant whitespace and the evidence that should change the next marketing decision.

P
Personalization Actions

The findings become prioritized positioning actions with a KPI, baseline, target, owner and execution horizon for the defined Buyer Persona and market.

KAI·ROI EQUATION · CUSTOMER EQUITY

This Competitive Positioning Lab creates operational evidence for the KAI·ROI layer

The lab does not redefine KAI·ROI. It creates a structured evidence asset that can support strategic implementation, Customer Equity reasoning, resource productivity and ROI analysis.

The formal KAI·ROI structure remains sovereign; this tool focuses on the quality of the competitive and positioning decision that feeds later measurement.
